CoQ10 and Statins: How Do They Affect Musculoskeletal Health? 

Cholesterol production in liver cells involves the conversion of 3-hydroxy-3-methyl glutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) by the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. Statins inhibit the activity of the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, thus limiting the intracellular production of cholesterol. Ubiquinol versus Ubiquinone 

95 percent of circulating CoQ10 in the body occurs as ubiquinol. When ubiquinol is taken orally as a CoQ10 supplement, gastric acid in the stomach oxidizes it to ubiquinone. However, once past the stomach, the ubiquinone is then converted back to ubiquinol through multiple biochemical pathways.
